SUPPORT FOR NIGERIAN BREAST CANCER RESEARCH FOUNDATION

  • The Nigeria Breast Cancer Study has now come to an end after over 13 years of sustained research collaborations.
  • BCRF funds is now being channelled towards developingtheinfrastructure necessarytoconductclinicalbreastcancertrialsin selected sites in Nigeria.
  • The clinical trial will be carried out in collaboration with other participating institutions which include University College Hospital / University of Ibadan (UCH/UI), Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH) and Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).
  • Funding is expected from Roche and otherdrugcompanies to support the trials
  • 165[UP1] women received financial support for pathology diagnosis and immunohistochemistry analysis of the collected breast biopsy samples.
  • Provision of some staffing and infrastructural support through the coordination of logistics and the provision of other resources for the success and growth of the laboratories.
  • Timely delivery of various equipment and reagents sent from Chicago that are needed to sustain and expand the activities of the laboratory.

SUPPORT FOR UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO STUDENTS & FACULTY EXCHANGE PROGRAM

University of Chicago Summer Research Student who were mentored by UCH/UI Faculty during the year are

CLEAN WATER PROJECTS

  • Continuous efforts being made to mitigate the challenges with the management of the boreholes and water committees set up to manage them
  • Provision of additional boreholes at Oluwole Cocoa Farm in Ekiti and Pineapple Farm at Oke-Igbo.

SUPPORT FOR PROF I.F ADEWOLE HEALTH HACKATHON WORKSHOP

HLF provided financial and transportation support towards the successful organization of the event which brought student teams together over several days to hack solutions to Nigeria’s healthcare problems using technology.

SUPPORT FOR SCRIPTURE UNION NIGERIA (REMO ZONE SUMMER CAMP 2018)

Support was provided to the Scripture Union (an International Christian Faith Based society) whose purpose is to transform society through Youth training and early intervention to enhance good conduct and societal good.

SUPPORT FOR CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT & SCHOLARLY WORK IN CANCER RESEARCH

HLF provided support to some key meetings and capacity building activities targeted towards developing, supporting and strengthening the skills of the multidisciplinary team. They include :

  1. A one-day stakeholders meeting held with the LUTH team on 3rd January 2018 aimed at discussing how to improve cancer care in Nigeria through Clinical Trials and training partnerships as championed by Prof Funmi Olopade, with a keynote address delivered by Prof Sola Olopade.
  1. A 2-day ARETTA Investigators meeting / Site Initiation visit which took place on the 10th & 11th of May 2018. A courtesy visit was paid to the CMD with other management staff in attendance.
  1. A formal commissioning of the Oncology Clean room at the department of Pharmacy, University College Hospital took place on 10th May 2018 with Ms. Susan Kiphart, one of the great philanthropic supporters in attendance
  1. A 2-day training which took place on 17th and 18th May 2018 on the ARETTA study organised for study coordinators, study monitors and data managers from all the participating sites – Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH), University College Hospital (UCH), Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).
  1. Support for Dr. Adekunle Oshin a Clinical Research specialist from Covance Incorporated, USA who facilitated the 2-day ARETTA training for study coordinators, study monitors and data managers
  1. Support from HLF through BCRF in purchasing procure 2 Safety hood cabinets for Lagos State teaching hospital (LUTH) and Obafemi Awolowo teaching Hospital (OAUTH) in preparation for the start of the ARETTA clinical trials
  1. Support to Alexandra Malayla (visiting student from the University of Chicago) to attend an International Psycho-Oncology Society Academy in Calabar with her mentor Dr. (Mrs.) Chioma Asuzu for five days in 2018

HOUSEHOLD AIR POLLUTION RESEARCH PROJECT

  • Focus is now on tracking the women and children who were part of the original randomized controlled intervention study in order to investigate the long-term impact of in-utero and early life exposure to HAP.
  • Regular weekly WebEx based calls continue to bring the Chicago and Ibadan teams together for the implementation of the project new goals.
  • Plans are ongoing to explore expansion of the program to other communities with the intention of using the findings of the initial study to influence policy on home construction standards and advocacy for rural electrification.
  • HLF supported the project by purchasing ethanol fuel for use by the study participants, as well as payment for the ethanol site.
  • Ms Jeanette Shorter from CGH and Ms Susan Kiphart from Chicago visited in May 2018. Ms. Kiphart who is one of the major philanthropists of CGH was here to formally commission the Safety Hood Cabinet at the Department of Pharmacy, UCH and to tour newly renovated facilities at the Radiation-Oncology department.
  • Dr Ian Foster and Dr Andrey Rzhetsky facilitated at the Bio-Informatics Master Class workshops for Faculty, Postgraduate and Undergraduate students from several science and bio-medical based departments. They also visited several departments to assess their computational capacities for future collaborations with HLF and the University of Ibadan.
